Upskilling Professional Driving Instructors of Young Learner Drivers: What Are We Waiting For?

Decades of research and development to address young drivers’ over-involvement in road crashes has led critical improvements understanding interventions, yet mostly focused on drivers or their parents. Driving instructors have a key role the driver safety system, substantially less attention been paid accreditation professional specific teaching drivers. Neurobiological during mid-to-late adolescence influences how people drive inflated risks they face relative adult learners. In this paper, we discuss several our studies supporting literature argue that: (a) adept higher-order instruction can improve behaviour ways that reduce crashes; (b) are willing be upskilled training needs; (c) currently lack adequate new motor vehicle features enhance safety, as do many adults, creating further demand driver-training industry. Given body work, field sufficiently progressed know both why should innovate transform industry will safety. However, also note current developments appear working against rather than towards improvements. Therefore, there is need prioritise implement change, harness advantages emerging technologies. Professional opportunities for driving not only potential benefit drivers, but parents; therefore, boosting traffic culture across community.
